Mining on Nvidia GeForce RTX 3080 and overclocking GPU

The manufacturer has taken RTX3000 graphics cards to a whole new level of performance. Looking ahead, we can say that, barring Nvidia’s restrictions on cryptocurrency mining, the Nvidia GeForce RTX 3080 Ti and RTX 3090 graphics cards are leading the graphics card market in terms of performance. However, given the price difference and virtually the same power, the 3080 Ti is more attractive than the 3090. To understand the difference between models with and without the prefix Ti, it is best to compare their capabilities in basic parameters.

RTX 3080 Specifications and Features

  • Overclocking 3080 for mining

It is worth first seeing how the video card will perform at default settings. GPUz shows that the core frequency is 1710 MHz, the memory has a resolution of 1188 × 16, which is 19 GHz. The default memory bandwidth is 760GB/s.

  • Let’s look at GPU hashrate and consumption.

The RTX 3080 is widely regarded as one of the best GPUs available today. Not only is it more powerful than the RTX 2080, but it’s also cheaper, which undoubtedly makes it more value for money. It’s a gaming beast, but what about mining?

Let’s test its GPU on several algorithms. Nominally, 3080 in stock gains 80 MH / s, but with a bit of effort, the card can be overclocked up to 100 MH / s when consuming 240 watts. Comparing with the previous card, 2080, we get a consumption of 160 with a hash rate of 40 MH / s. But this is not the limit.

The Gigabyte version seems to have issues with memory cooling, causing the hashrate to drop over time.

The power consumption of the GeForce RTX3080 is quite high: up to 350W at stock clock speeds and around 250W at 70% power limit. Here is a complete list of optimal values for algorithms and corresponding hashrates when testing:

How to overclock for mining Nvidia GeForce RTX 3080

Overclocking RTX 3080 on Windows

It is recommended to overclock with MSI Afterburner – it is free and most reliable.

Using the data above, change the three sliders, selecting the desired data.

  1. Core Clock (core frequency) – red in the image;
  2. Memory Clock (memory frequency) – blue;
  3. Power Limit is yellow.

If you use MSI Afterburner, it’s single Windows.

RTX 3080 Overclocking in Hive OS

  1. Choose a farm;
  2. Choosing a Worker;
  3. Overclocking window – set the values for a particular card or all at once. We prescribe and start testing.

Observe the hash rate values based on the data above. If the values differ by more than 5%, make sure that the values are set correctly.

Overclocking the RTX 3080 in Rave OS

  1. Choosing a Worker;
  2. Worker Setup;
  3. Go into Tunning and set the values. There is one peculiarity – in the Memory field write the value multiplied by 2;
  4. Save the parameters – test.

RTX 3080 Ti overclocking: As far as overclocking the RTX 3080 Ti, at default settings, this card performs almost the same as the 3080 when overclocked. In August, we managed to crack NVIDIA’s mining protection by almost 70%, but due to the lack of testing data, it is still difficult to draw a conclusion on the advisability of overclocking.

Power and temperature

Overclocking the GeForce RTX 3080 consumes a huge amount of power. By default, power consumption is already slightly higher than the GeForce RTX 2080 Ti. However, with overclocking, the power increases from 473 W to 540 W, that is, by 67 W, or 14%. If you think about the ratio of power to performance, you will notice that the average increase in performance was 9%, but it required 14% more power. It’s inefficient.

(*) Values are based on the best prices I have been able to find so far. The GPU market is notorious for its volatility, so these numbers should be used as a guide only.

So far, the Gigabyte 3080 does not offer the best power efficiency even with a 30% reduction in power consumption. Another point to keep in mind is that powerful PSUs are expensive, it may be more profitable to put together a rig that produces less but consumes less and therefore doesn’t require a huge PSU to run.

But, if power efficiency isn’t that much of a concern to you, then the 3080 does offer a much better hash rate for every dollar invested.

Relevance of buying RTX3080 and RTX 3080Ti for mining

The main criterion of relevance is time, i.e. how much the equipment will pay for itself and will be profitable. As of 09/21/2021, the RTX3080 makes a profit of approximately $4.04 per day, including electricity costs at a price of $0.1 per kilowatt. The average cost of a video card is 200,000 rubles ($2,750). Given the data, we consider the payback period, it turns out approximately 1 year 10 months. Conclusion: in about 2 years, the RTX3080 will be generating a profit of about $120 per month. As for the RTX3080ti, with an income of $5.74 and a cost of about 220,000 rubles or $2,990 – in about 1.5 years, the profit will be about $170 per month.

In conclusion

It’s hard to make a definitive opinion on the RTX 3080 at this point. It’s a new card, so it’s highly likely that we haven’t unlocked its full mining potential yet. But, clearly, this video card does look like a better investment than previous models, but only because of how overpriced the 1080 and 2080 are at the moment.
